Athletes of the WeekTrent University is proud to announce that Zekarias Habtmichael is the RILEY'S-JUNCTION Male Athlete of the Week for the week of September 19. Running in his first university cross country race Zekarias finished the 7.4 km race in second place with a time of 24:17. Zekarias is a native of Eritrea and is a first-year Economics student. Trent University is proud to announce that Amy Bambury is the RILEY'S-JUNCTION Female Athlete of the Week for the week of September 19. Amy, a member of the women's rugby team, scored a try in Trent's 12-10 victory of York University this past week. Trent now sits in second place in the OUA Russell Division. Amy hails from Kitchener, Ontario and is a third-year Concurrent Education student. Freshmen lead the way for Trent Cross CountryOn Saturday, September 17, Trent University cross country athletes travelled to Guelph to compete in the Gryphon Open. Leading the way on the men's side was freshman Zekarias Habtemichael with a second place finish against a field of 87 runners. Zekarias finished the 7.4km course with a time of 24:17. Second year athlete Mike Minor finished in 16th place (26:33), freshman Clarke Richardson finished in 41st place (30:27). Leading the way for Trent on the women's side was freshman Jutta Merlainnen in 7th place with a time of 15:28, over the 4km course. Second year athlete Chantal Gagne finished in 32nd place (17:27), followed closely by freshman Stephanie Mitchell in 33rd (17:28). The women's race had a field of 61 runners. Trent Rowers Begin SeasonOn Sunday, September 18, the Trent University rowing team competed at the Western Invitational Regatta in London Ontario. Leading the way with a third place finish was the lightweight men's four (Sean Whitaker, Brad Cutler, Ed Rushton, Leath Swierenga, and coxie Jill Kunza). The women's varsity eight finished second to a very strong Western University team. The men's varsity eight finished in fourth place. Trent will compete at the Head of the Rideau in Ottawa, September 25. Trent Rugby Earns WinThe Trent women's rugby team defeated York University in OUA league play, Sunday, September 18, by a score of 12-10. Scoring points for Trent were Amy Bambury with a try, and Erin Awe with a try and a conversion. "This was a very important win for us, as the regular season is short (six games), and each game is important," said Assistant Coach Craig Harris. With the win Trent moves into a second place tie with Wilfrid Laurier University. Trent hosts Wilfrid Laurier Friday, September 23 at 7 p.m. Trent Men's Rugby Defeated by BrockOn Saturday, September 17, the Trent University men's rugby team dropped a 29-13 decision to Brock University. An entertaining first half of rugby was displayed for the 250 plus crowd in attendance at Trent University stadium. Scoring for the Excalibur was Mike Simmons with a penalty kick, and a grubber kick, and Harrison Snowdon added a try. Man of the match honours went to rookie Fly-half Jeff McDiarmid.
