Trent Swims at Record Setting Pace

The Trent University Swim team traveled to Toronto for the Ryerson Open this past weekend for a meet against Ryerson and York University. The Excalibur team dominated the competition, so much so that Trent would still have won the meet if Ryerson and York combined their total team points.

Leading the way was Jessica Madder who grabbed 4 gold medals in the Open 50m Backstroke, Open 100m Backstroke, Open 100m Breaststroke, and as a member of the 200m Medley relay. Madder set records in all 4 events, including the 100m Breaststroke which was also the longest standing school record at Trent University. Dana Gordon broke 2 meet records in the 100m Open Free, as well as the Female Open 200m Free Relay. Erin Appleman set a new meet record in the Female Open 100m Fly as well as being a member of the Female Open 200m Medley Relay.

On the Men’s side Alex Babaris lead the way, breaking 2 of his own records in the Male 50m Open Backstroke, as well as in the Male 100m Open Fly. Teammate Che Mineque also broke the record in the Open 50m Backstroke, but finished in 2nd place to Babaris. Scott Adams brought home 2 more records for the Excalibur in the Open 50m Breaststroke and the 100m Breaststroke.

Trent’s next meet is at York October 19th.

Excalibur Rowing Strikes Gold in Ottawa

The Trent University Rowing team traveled to Ottawa for the Head of the Rideau River this past weekend. Competing against teams from Ottawa, Carleton, McGill, Queens and various Quebec rowing clubs, Trent dominated the 5.5 kilometer course. Of the 40 Excalibur Athletes, 38 brought home Gold medals.

Five athletes captured double Gold Medals. Peter Van Rooijen Won the Varsity Men’s Single for the 2nd week in a row, Van Rooijen was also a member of the Men’s 8 which brought home gold. Juliana Stonehouse also brought home gold in the Women’s single as well as the Women’s 8. Shawn McIntosh brought home gold in the Lightweight Men’s double (along with Fraser Berkhout), Shawn was also a member of the Men’s 8. Kaitlin Byrick captured the Women’s Lightweight crown (along with partner Mandy Sarkadi), Byrick was also a member of the Women’s 8. Brent Holmes was a member of the Men’s 8 squad as well as the Peterborough Rowing Club Youth 4, that also brought home gold.

Both the Men’s and Women’s 8 squads stroked the fastest times of the day on the Rideau River. This is quite impressive considering these athletes are competing against club level rowers as well as their University competitors. The future looks bright for the Excalibur Rowing program as both the Men’s and Women’s 8s won the novice races. The Novice division is for athletes who have zero rowing experience prior to this season.

"It was a great weekend for us, it reflects the hard work that everyone is putting in every morning at practice," said coach Carol Love. "Right now we’re getting ready to perform at our home meet this weekend, and continue building momentum to the OUA championships (October 25th @ Kingston)."

The Head of the Trent Rowing Regatta is this Saturday the 4th of October starting at 8am.
