Excalibur Women's Rugby End Season on Positive Note

The Trent Excalibur Women's Rugby team finished up their OUA season on an encouraging note. Trent lost their OUA quarterfinal to the Laurier Golden Hawk's by a score of 12-8.

"I feel we had a successful season," said coach Nancy Marcotte. "The Girls played hard all season and we really improved as a unit. Our season's not done yet, as we are going to continue to play in tournaments and exhibition games so that we can gain the experience that every top program needs." Every starter is eligible to play for Trent next year. Trent finished the season at 0-5, and in 10th place.

Trent Volleyball set to Open Season

The Trent Excalibur Women's Volleyball team wrapped up their exhibition season against Sir Sandford Fleming Tuesday night with a straight set victory (3-0). Trent finished the preseason with an undefeated record. The Excalibur will host Seneca Thursday, October 16 at 8pm for the OCAA regular season opener.

Trent Athletes of the Week

Trent University is proud to announce that Peter Van Rooijen has been named the RILEY'S-JUNCTION Male Athlete of the Week for September 29– October 5. Peter won Gold in the University Heavy Men's Single at the Head of the Trent Rowing Championships on October 4. Peter is undefeated in Singles competition this season. Peter was also a member of the Heavy Men's 8 boat, which brought home the Silver. Peter is a 3rd year Business Student, who hails from Brockville, Ontario.

Trent University is proud to announce that Mandy Sarcadi has been named the RILEY'S-JUNCTION Female Athlete of the Week for September 29-October 5. Mandy won the Silver medals in the Women's Lightweight Single at the Head of the Trent Rowing Championships on October 4. Mandy added another Silver to her collection as part of the Heavy Women's 8 boat. Mandy is a 4th year Geography student from Vanessa, Ontario.

Excalibur X-Country

The Trent Excalibur X-Country team traveled to Kingston for the Queen's Open this past Saturday. Leading the way was Lee Appelby. The Freshman finished in 13th place with a time of 35:07 over the 10km course. Teammate Steve Hart finished 24th place with a time of 35:57. The Excalibur Men's team finished in 5th place. Leading the way for the Women Excalibur was Amy Ingram who finished in 38th place. The next meet for the Excalibur is October 18 at McMaster University. This will be the final tune up meet before the OUA championships in Toronto October 25.

Excalibur Excitement Grows

The Trent Excalibur Rowing team was in action Saturday at the Head of the Trent. The Excalibur came away with some very impressive results at the largest single day Regatta in North America.

Leading the way was Peter Van Rooijen. Peter continued his domination on the OUA circuit, with another victory in the University Men's Singles. Peter also posted the fastest singles time of the day over the 4.5km course, and was a member of the Trent Men's Heavy 8 squad that placed a very close 2nd to Brock. "It was a great result for our guys. Brock is a perennial power in this event, and to finish just a couple of seconds behind that everyone's hard work is paying off," said Coach Carol Love. The Men's Heavy Double, Fraser Berkhout and Shawn McIntosh, brought home the Bronze medal.

On the women's side, Mandy Sarcadi led the way with a Silver medal in the Women's Lightweight single. Sarcadi also helped stroke the Women's heavy 8 squad to a 2nd place finish. The women's Novice 8 boat brought home another Gold Medal for Trent. The novice race is for rowers with zero experience prior to this season.

"It was a great day for Trent Rowing," said Love. "This was our best results in years at the Head of the Trent. It's very exciting and it's great for the athletes. It was a good day for everyone involved."

The Rowing team will travel to St Catherine's for the Brock Invitational Saturday, October 11.

Trent Rugby Report

The Trent University Men's Rugby team traveled to London Saturday, October 4, to play the Western Mustangs. Western won by a score of 53-5. Scoring the lone try for Trent was Matt Bauman. "It was a tough game for us," said Coach Darrell Devine. "We were playing without 6 starters, and Western is a good team. We have almost 2 weeks off before our next game, hopefully that will allow us to get healthy." Trent (0-4) travels to Toronto (1-3) October 15.

The Trent University Women's Rugby team hosted the Guelph Gryphons Saturday, October 4. Guelph took a 22-0 lead at half time, but a young, feisty Excalibur fought for a 2nd half tie. The game ended 22-0. "Last year we lost to them by a score of 80-0," said Assistant Coach Craig Harris. "Anytime you can improve by 60 points in one season you have to be happy. We continue to play hard as a team and learn from our mistakes."

Trent hosts the Laurier Golden Hawks Thursday, October 9 in the OUA Consolation Bowl.

Trent Soccer Report

The Trent University Men's Soccer team played three games this past weekend. Trent Traveled to Ryerson on Thursday October 2. Trent lost the game by a score of 2-0. The Excalibur then hosted Queen's Friday night. Queen's is one of the top teams in the nation. Trent lost by a score of 2-1. Minh Hyunh scored the lone goal for Trent. In Sunday's game, Trent lost to Ryerson by a score of 2-0. Trent (0-8) travels to Brock (5-2) on Wednesday October 8.

The Trent University Women's Soccer team played 2 games this past weekend. Trent lost to Queen's by a score of 3-0, on Saturday. In Sundays game the Lady Excalibur tied Ryerson 1-1. Scoring for the Excalibur was Meg Walker. Trent's (0-6-1) next game is Saturday October 11 at Ottawa (6-1-1).
