Male Athlete of the WeekRyan Coghlin and the Trent Excalibur Men's Volleyball team picked up a pair of wins this past week. The Excalibur started their week with a 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11) win over the Fleming Knights. Mr. Coghlin led all scorers with 19 points (15 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace). Trent then beat Boreal in another close 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-7) win, with Mr. Coghlin once again leading the way, this time with 18 points (17 kills, 1 ace). With the two wins, Mr. Coghlin has helped his Trent team move into the 3rd and final playoff spot in the east region. For his efforts Mr. Coghlin has been named OCAA Male Athlete of the Week. Mr. Coghlin plays the power position for the Trent men's volleyball team and is currently in 4th place in the OCAA East Division for total offense with 106 points in 10 matches this season. Previously this season, Mr. Coghlin represented Trent at the OCAA All-Star game in North Bay. Mr. Coghlin hails from Atwood, Ontario and is a second-year Anthropology student. Trent Curlers AdvancePeterborough, ON- It was a successful weekend for the Trent University Curling teams, on Sunday, January 23rd as the Peterborough Curling Club and Trent University hosted the OUA East Regional Curling Championships. The Trent women finished in 2nd place with a 2-1 record, as Trent defeated the University of Toronto, and Wilfrid Laurier, but lost to Queens University. On the men's side, Trent equaled their female counterparts by finishing in 2nd place with a 2-1 record as Trent defeated Toronto and Wilfrid Laurier but lost to Queens. "It was a great performance for our team's, It's always good to open the season with a winning record. It puts us in good position to qualify for the provincial finals," said Men's coach Steve Whitehill. Trent will travel to York University, February 5th for the OUA cross-over. Each team will carry their current record into the competition with the top 4 teams advancing to the OUA finals. Trent Fencing Women Succeed at CarletonOttawa, ON- The Trent University Fencing team competed at the Carleton Invitational, Saturday, January 22nd. The women's sabre team finished in 4th place, members of the sabre squad were Sheena McKay, Dana Fedderson, Melynda Long, and Brooke Ring. The women's foil team finished in 5th place(Tamar Walsh, Madihah Hepburn, Nicole Beneschek, and Megan Murrant). Trent University will host the OUA East Regionals, February 12th-13th at the P.S.B. Wilson Athletic Center. Trent Volleyball Sweeps AgainThe Trent University Men's and Women's volleyball teams swept College Boreal on Saturday, January 22, at Trent University. In the first game, the women won by a score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-19). Leading the way for the Excalibur was second-year middle, Ashley Ceci, with 12 points (9 kills, 1 block, 2 aces). With the win the women move into second place in the OCAA East Division. In the men's game, Trent defeated the Boreal vipers by a score of 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-7). Leading the attack for the men was All-Star Ryan Coghlin with 18 points (17 kills, 1 ace). With the win, the Trent men move into third place and are tied for the final playoff spot with Sir Sandford Fleming. Trent's next game is Friday, January 28, at Trent University versus La Cite College.
