Trent Athletes of the Week

Trent University is proud to announce that Alex Babaris is the RILEY'S-JUNCTION Male Athlete of the Week for the week of February 14th. Swimming in his final OUA Championship Alex won a silver medal in the Men's 100m fly and bronze in the 200m fly. Alex was also awarded the OUA Distinction award his for career achievements in swimming. Alex is a native of Toronto, Ontario and is a 5th year History, English student.

Trent University is proud to announce that Tamar Walsh is the RILEY'S-JUNCTION Female Athlete of the Week for the week of February 14th. Tamar won gold medal in the women's foil at the OUA East Regional Fencing Championships as well as helping her foil team finish in 3rd place and advance to the OUA Fencing Championships. Tamar hails from Coldwater, Ontario and is a 3rd year Anthropology student.

Alex Babaris honoured at OUA Swimming Championships

St. Catherines, ON- The Trent University swim team competed in the OUA Swim Championships at Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario, February, 11th-13th. Fifth year veteran Alex Babaris was honoured with an OUA Distinction Award. The Distinction Award is presented to those graduating swimmers who have won individual OUA Championship medals in at least 3 different years, as well as scoring at CIS Championships.

Swimming in his final OUA race, Babaris led the way with a bronze in the 100m fly((56.47) and a silver in the 50m fly(25.66). The 50m fly was an exciting race as teammate Scott Farrow finished just .02 behind Alex for the bronze(25.68). Both Farrow and Babaris were narrowly defeated by Westerns Brad Vanderkam(25.43). Farrow, also finished in 6th place in the 100m fly(58.10). Scott and Alex later teamed up with Aidan Lumley and Anthony Ferri for a 5th place finish and a new team record(1:38.35) in the 200m freestyle relay.

On the women's side, freshman Laura Martin led the way with a 13th place finish in the 200m breast and a new team record(2:49.39). Erin Appleman set new team records in the 100m(1:03.59) and 200m(2:20.34) freestyle events. The University of Toronto won both the men's and women's OUA team titles. Both Scott and Alex will compete at the CIS Championships, February 18th-20th in Edmonton, Alberta.

Trent Skiers Compete at OUA Championships

North Bay, ON- The Trent University Nordic Ski team competed at the OUA Championships, February 12th-13th, in North Bay, Ontario. In the 5km Skate, Adrienne Mason finished in 21st place(17:06), Rachel Herron finished in 33rd(18:08), and Gillian Kunza was 45th(20:20). Mason, Herron and Kunza finished in 11th place in the skate relay. In the 10km classic, Adrienne finished in 21st place(39:42). In the team standings, the Trent women finished in 7th place.

In the men's competition, Trent University graduate Stephen Hart, now competing for Lakehead University captured the gold medal in both the 10km skate(27:10), and the 15km classic(41:41). Hart also led Lakehead to 1st place in the men's relay as well as the OUA Men's Nordic Team Championship.

Walsh, Hepburn Continue to Impress at Championships

Peterborough, ON- Trent University played host to some of the provinces top fencers, February 12th-13th for the OUA East Regional Fencing Championships. The top 8 Individuals in and top 3 teams in each blade would advance to the OUA Championships February, 26th-27th at Brock University. Leading the way for Trent was Tamar Walsh who finished in 1st place in the women's foil, followed by teammate Madihah Hepburn who finished in 3rd place. Also advancing in individuals for Trent was Sheena Mckay with an 8th place finish in the sabre. Walsh, and Hepburn would later team up with Nicole Beneshek to help the Trent foil team advance with a 3rd place finish. The women's epee team also finished in 3rd place to advance.

On the men's side, Tyson Shennett, Cory Chisolm, and Jon Hale all advanced to the Championships in the men's foil. Grant Johnstone advanced in the epee, while Troy Sawyer advanced in the sabre. "It was a good weekend for us," said Assistant Coach Joe MacDonald. "Qualifying eight individuals and twoteams is a direct result of the hard work these athletes have put in all year."
