Ryan Cole ’09, B.Sc. Chemical Physics, Timmins, Ontario
Symons Medal Recipient
When Ryan Cole was applying for university, he was more than a little unsure of what lied ahead. He admits that despite excelling in high school, he had more than one university tell him that because he was legally blind, they didn’t know how he would succeed at the university level. “I always knew being legally blind and getting a degree in Chemical Physics wouldn’t exactly be easy, but I wasn’t ready for people to tell me it was impossible before I even had the chance to try,” says Ryan. “Trent’s attitude was completely different from the start.”

Carmen feels the picturesque landscape at Trent in Peterborough really spoke to her. Ultimately so did the thought-provoking subject matter she encountered while completing her joint major in English Literature and History—dual interests that have accompanied her since high school.

Governor General’s Silver Medal Recipient
Most economics students learn how developing countries incorporate capitalism into their society through textbooks. Duc Hien Nguyen lived and breathed it. Nguyen recalls: “Growing up in Vietnam, as the country brought in capitalism, I witnessed the miraculous power of economic growth, and the dire social and environmental consequences accompanying it.”

Initially searching for an international education in the big city, Jessica ultimately found all she wanted in a post-secondary community at Trent University. Jessica still treasures the packaging that encased her offer of admission as a memento of her new life in Canada. Since arriving on Peterborough’s scenic campus from St. Maarten she simply describes her Trent experience as “happiness.”

Karly’s love for Trent University began when she was 13 years old. As a coxy for an adult rowing team competing at the Head of Trent, she was immediately charmed by the small-community feel and captivating beauty of the campus. From her first day at introductory seminar week through graduation Karly made solid friendships for life and developed an enduring sense of herself as an Indigenous woman.

Stan Yavno was drawn to Trent University due to ecology and life-history of invasive fish expert, Dr. Michael Fox. Stan shares that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with Professor Fox as his faculty advisor who has, for years, been working on a collaborative effort with researchers from Europe on the spread of pumpkinseed sunfish.
