Joshua Lanthier '14, B.Ed., Consecutive Bachelor of Education, Ottawa, Ontario
To cap off his formal teaching education, Joshua felt compelled to join the Consecutive Bachelor of Education program at Trent University, finding his place in the Primary/Junior Division.
His passion for teaching stemmed from great teachers he encountered throughout his schooling. His future ambitions in education were accelerated by the welcoming, close-knit learning environment he found at Trent’s Peterborough campus. A community just as devoted to making a difference in the lives of students as Joshua himself.
Joshua always had a natural interest in teaching. “Going through university I saw that having an education can be fun—you just need to find your passion,” said Joshua. “I hope I can inspire someone else to pursue their dreams as well one day. My year at Trent has really inspired me in this hope.”
A self-described technology buff, Joshua is dedicated to finding new ways to make his in-class teaching strategies more interesting. “I’m always trying to make the classroom more dynamic and thought provoking,” said Joshua. “It doesn’t have to be with technology, but teaching and learning should bring joy. I’m open to finding ways to bring that about. I won’t leave any door closed in that regard.”
In turn, Joshua’s love for technology and teaching earned him some notable recognition. He was honoured to receive the Innovation in Teaching Award from Trent, awarded to a teacher candidate who contributes innovation to the field of education.
Joshua feels Trent provided theories, tools, and practical experience. His professors and practicum manager offered real-life knowledge by sharing professional contacts, preparing for placement interviews, and offering practical advice about daily teaching life at home and abroad.
Yet Joshua feels it is the passion of the professors that sets Trent apart. “Each one of them clearly loves what they do,” states Joshua. “Trent’s not only given me the professional knowledge and experience, they’ve tried to give me the right attitude and motivations needed for teaching. This is the most important thing.”
He acknowledges his professors, in particular, Donna Southern for their support, advice, inspiration and general “feel goods” during his teaching placement.
Joshua summarizes, “They just really give you their time and knowledge.”
After leaving Trent this spring Joshua has big travel and teaching plans. In August he will travel to Egypt to teach a grade three class at an International School.
Simply stated, Joshua wants to inspire students. “I want students to realize they’re all special,” affirms Joshua. “Every student has the ability. Period.” He continues, “I want to be the teacher that allows students to feel welcome; to feel important; to feel like they will succeed; and that they are good. Every child needs a champion, an adult who will never give up on them. I want to be that person.”
In closing he wishes to thank his family. “You’re the reason I want to be the teacher I’ve written about here. Thank you for the support. Words can’t say it enough. Thank you!”
