Kelly Patano

Kelly Patano '10, B.A. Honours, English Literature and Psychology, Ajax, Ontario

Self-described as someone who “would take everything if I could,” Kelly Patano boldly took on a joint major in English Literature and Psychology. She simultaneously fed her love of reading and her interest in human motivation and behaviour by combining with her academic life at Trent University Durham with her calling as a devoted member of the community, eager to help others in any way possible.

According to Kelly, “my favourite Trent experiences include anything where I was in a position to be of service to other students, such as through my involvement with the Peer Mentoring and Pen Pal Programs, and being the president of the Trent Oshawa Student Association.

Kelly feels her volunteer opportunities enhanced her Trent experience. She states, “they were all important for my personal development because they helped foster my interest in service positions, and encouraged me to take on more responsibility and do more with each year.”

She believes the best part about studying at Trent University Durham is the tight knit community that has emerged from the small campus. “I think Trent University establishes a small community of dedicated students, staff, and faculty who wish to make a difference in the world,” said Kelly, “I can safely say that the people I have met through my time at Trent have been some of the most helpful and kind people I have encountered.”

Kelly feels that Trent emphasized the value of a liberal arts degree and the skills that come from it, including critical thinking and problem solving. She leaves with an outstanding academic record and an abundance of real-world volunteer credentials. Upon graduation she would like to stay in the school system and work in an advising or guidance counselling role. “I hope to make a difference by helping other people and inspiring them to be their best selves,” said Kelly. “Having the opportunity to assist others has always been incredibly rewarding to me.”
