Jessica Alana Rogers '11, B.A. Honours, Business Administration and Economics, St. Maarten
Initially searching for an international education in the big city, Jessica ultimately found all she wanted in a post-secondary community at Trent University. Jessica still treasures the packaging that encased her offer of admission as a memento of her new life in Canada. Since arriving on Peterborough’s scenic campus from St. Maarten she simply describes her Trent experience as “happiness.”
Academically she thrived in her joint-major of Business Administration and Economics. A full-year German course reflects her desire for diversity in learning.
Jessica describes her academic program as big yet small and ultimately ideal for her. “Business Administration allows me to be creative and unique, whereas Economics enables me to explore what I already discovered," said Jessica. “It was the best preparation for my career choice.”
Her hard work paid off. Not short of ambition, Jessica completed her four year degree in only three.
Outside of the classroom, Jessica was devoted to assisting fellow international students. She was a volunteer for the New Canadian Centre and UNICEF Trent. She was the director of events for the Trent African Caribbean Student Union, served as the president of the Trent International Students’ Association and was also the international commissioner of the Trent Central Student Association.
“All in all I truly got to be me in my learning environment,” said Jessica. “These experiences allowed me to take my learning outside of the classroom before I am faced with the realities of the workforce.”
Jessica is currently working at Kawartha Land Trust in a position that stemmed from an internship within one of her administration classes. Going forward with her Trent degree, Jessica feels equipped for the real world. Graduate school may be in her future but in the meantime she hopes to pay it forward and make a difference by working to contribute to the lifestyle of students at Trent, especially international students.
“My happiness was generated at this University and the level of pride I have developed is something I will definitely showcase to others on my island as well as across this country.”
