What should I do if I get sick?

Before you get sick, we recommend you find a flu buddy to provide mutual care in the event one of you gets sick. You should also consider picking up a thermometer to help determine if you have influenza.

If you have symptoms of the flu, take care of yourself and try not to spread it to others. Stay home or in your dorm room as much as possible. Cover your sneezes and wash your hands thoroughly and often. If you are in residence, tell your Don you are sick with the flu. Make arrangements with your professors and fellow students to keep up with your schoolwork and make up any work you have missed.

If you are concerned about your symptoms, call Telehealth Ontario at: 1-866-797-0000. If you need to see a doctor, make an appointment with Student Health Services at 748-1481.

If you are in your first year at Trent University and are living off campus, your Off Residence Don can provide you with information about support and resources available on campus and in the Peterborough community if you contract H1N1. The Off Residence Don can be contacted through the information provided to you by e-mail or through Housing Services at housing@trentu.ca.

Otherwise, take care of yourself, and:

  • Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and eat lightly
  • Stay home 24 hours after your fever is gone
  • Find a flu buddy so you can take care of each other if one of you gets sick

Normal sick leave and academic provisions apply. Requests for additional time or accommodation should be discussed with your supervisor or professor.
