retired. He is now working at home as a freelance writer/editor/communications
consultant. David also enjoys working as a rental agent for his beach-front
condo in Mexico. He and his wife, Tandy (who also is planning on retirement),
spend a couple of weeks there during the year, but let others share their
paradise when they are not there. He is happy to give special rates to
Trent Alumni. As well as their vacations to Mexico, David and Tandy have
travelled to the Caribbean, the UK where they see old Trent friends Graham
and Heather Wiffen and South Africa (including a wonderful visit with Trent

William R. Smalluk '70 is in his 24th year of piloting helicopters and
remains a clear- cut bonafide heterosexual. He continues to be politically
incorrect with the granola crunching, cappuccino sucking, bicycle clip riding
left wing types. When not flying he frequents England and spends winters in
Australia visiting his now 15 year old son on his summer holidays. William
still very actively plays the stock market, dines out with beautiful women,
studies criminology and plays golf.

Steve Nicholls '76 recently won the Cork Literary Review short story competition
in Ireland, the first Canadian ever to do so. "The Literary Review may be on the
small side of global publishing, but the competition is pretty stiff," says Liz
Willows, one of the contest organizers. "We had a huge amount of entries." Irish
novelist/editor David Marcus, who judged the contest, called the story an "outstanding
example of the anecdotal short story" and "an object lesson in the perfect control
and production of graphic narrative." The story, Return of the Yeti, deals with a
boy and his grandfather who join a hunt for a mysterious pike nicknamed Darth Vader.
This past spring, the manuscript for his recently completed novel was named to
the semifinalist of the inaugural Chapters/Robertson Davies Award, beating 500 other novels
for the honour. He also took third place in the essay division of the Canadian Authors
Association writing contest and placed among the semifinalists of The
Writers' Union of Canada competition. As well, he earned a gallery showing
for a photograph he entered in the Toronto Star photo contest -- one of only
75 selected from 15,000 entries. Steve lives in Whitby with my wife Mary-Anne (Mihorean) '76 and his two daughters.
