Trent University to its credit has responded in an outstanding manner. This year we have had the largest percentage increase in applicants in our history, recruiting 25% more students from Ontario high schools specifically. This leads the way in being the largest percentage increase in applications acquired by any other Ontario University! What1s more we have addressed students' concerns, provided tangible evidence of the benefits of studying at a small liberal arts and science university and provided a level of service that out paces most other national institutions. As university recruitment has become more competitive and expensive Trent has responded with support and increased financial resources enabling us to expand our activities and services in 1999. It has been a particularly exciting and rewarding time this year with special events, revamped publications, a full liaison team and tremendous support from students, staff, faculty and alumni. With four contract and two full-time liaison officers, a new administrative assistant and our manager Jeff Macnab '78, we visited over 500 schools in Canada and spoke with approximately 4,700 prospective students. In addition we were well represented with faculty, staff and alumni at the Toronto University Fair. This has become a kick off event attracting over 40,000 visitors from across southern Ontario. We know however, and I1m sure you would agree, that when students step onto the Trent campus they begin to understand the full impact of what Trent is all about. To that end we have played host to over 2000 visitors during two Open House events in the Fall and over the March Break. Guests openly comment on the beauty of the campus, the friendliness of all participants, and the extensive opportunities exhibited both in and out of the classroom. In fact some guests ventured comments like "these were the most informative tours" and "best event attended at a university." With our new publications we speak to the value of a liberal arts and science education for personal growth but also identify how the work force requires graduates who can think critically, communicate effectively and continue to learn and adapt in a shifting work environment. There is a new energy in the publications which captures a vibrancy on campus, highlights the calibre of our alumni, faculty and students, conveys opportunities for students' personal development while still providing critical program, college and admissions information in an easily accessible format. This, in addition to school visits, special events and general outreach from the Trent community has increased interest and inquiries over 45% from our previous year. In responding to these requests, conducting personal tours, preparing transfer credits for students transferring from college or university (which has become an increasing demand) and ultimately in sending out an offer of admission, Trent has led the way in customer service. This has extended internationally with a commitment to international recruitment in the United States, Mexico, South America, Asia, the Caribbean, Turkey and the Middle East. Always, our personal touch, interest in the individual and quick response sets us apart from many other schools. Our theme this year,"Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders," reflects our reputation and all of the areas in which Trent continues to lead the way: in academics, research, philosophy of education, athletics, extra-curricular involvement, in our alumni successes and in our ability still to focus on the individual student and their particular needs. You will remember all of these things and they remain true to Trent today. The Trent that we speak of to new students has kept pace in the competitive university environment but it is still a Trent that each of you will recognize and identify with. Maclean's continues to rank Trent first out of Ontario's undergraduate universities. We're proud of that. We're proud to represent those qualities and we are proud that you have been a part of this achievement. Alumni have always contributed to the experience of current and prospective students. You may have participated in a student1s decision by sharing positive experiences, posting information and posters of Trent in classrooms, offices and shared spaces, participating in the Toronto Recruitment Fair in September, providing testimonials, writing letters and hosting information evenings. It is a contribution we value highly and students arriving at Trent always comment on how friendly and helpful the whole community is. If anyone else would like to join us in any of our activities, or if you would like to receive some new Trent literature please contact the liaison office directly at (705) 748-1332 or liaison@trentu.ca. We welcome your comments, ideas and suggestions and encourage you to submit your updated activities, contact numbers and any testimonials of your Trent experience. From our team we thank you for your continuous support. It has been a tremendous year in terms of applications. We look forward to registering a host of bright and exciting new students and look forward to working with you in the future in all of our activities.
