Five Trent Profs in Running for TVO's Best Lecturer Competition

Professor Carolyn Kay with studentsFive Trent professors have made the cut and have taken up the challenge to compete for the title of TV Ontario's Best Lecturer 2007. The professors are: Dr. Jim Cosgrave, Sociology; jointly-nominated Dr. Ivana Elbl and Professor Martin Elbl, History; Dr. Carolyn Kay, History; and Dr. Faye Pickrem, Cultural Studies.

The hunt for 2007's Best Lecturer began in January 2006 with a call for nominations advertised through student newspapers and on TVO. Professors and instructors at all Ontario colleges and universities were eligible.

The result was 258 heartfelt nominations, of which 155 met the criteria for the competition and were asked to participate by submitting a video of one of their much-admired lectures. Of these, 71 professors, including the five from Trent, will compete for the title of Ontario's Best Lecturer.

This year's competition promises to be exciting, with professors hailing from all corners of the post-secondary community in domains ranging from philosophy to food science, sports management to medicine, astronomy to psychology.

From the field of 71, TVO's Best Lecturer Competition committee will select 30 semifinalists whose names will be announced this fall. A panel of independent judges will reduce the 30 to a short list of ten. The judges – Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente, novelist Camilla Gibb, and Maclean's managing editor Tony Keller – will be looking for lecturers who engage their listeners with passion, flair, and clarity, conveying their message with genuine conviction. In a gripping five-week pursuit of academia's latest sought-after award, the top 10 finalists will deliver their winning lectures on TVO's Big Ideas in February and March 2007. It will then be up to the viewers to determine who will be named Ontario's Best Lecturer 2007.

Up for grabs, in addition to the prestigious title, is a $10,000 scholarship from TD Meloche Monnex, which will be awarded to the winning professor's school.

This is the second year for the competition. Last year, Arne Kislenko, Professor of History at Ryerson University, claimed the title, beating out nine other finalists from six universities.
