Study Spaces

Trent University Library & Archives offers a variety of different study and learning spaces to meet your needs at both of our library locations. Learn more about these spaces and how to access them below.

Book a study space online.

The Library requires users to check in to their booked study spaces. Here's what you need to know:

When you arrive at your study room, you'll need to complete a quick check-in process. Simply follow the link provided in your confirmation email or scan the QR code located in the room to check in.

Please note, there is a 15-minute window from the start of your booking time to complete this check-in. If you do not check in within this timeframe, your booking will be automatically cancelled, and the room will be made available for others to reserve.  

If you're having a hard time checking in, ask for help from the staff at the Library Service Desk.  Please note you can't check in more than five minutes before your booking start time.  

This procedure is intended to ensure full use of our highly popular study rooms, which are often booked but left empty. We want to maximize the availability of study rooms so more students can use them.

Our one-person study booths and study carrels are perfect for focused, solo work. Book a booth or carrel for up to 3 hours per day. You can reserve a room up to 30 days in advance. Be sure to book early during busy periods like exams and midterms.

There are 3 study booths designated for students registered through the Student Accessibility Office. Students with accessibility requirements can obtain the code to these study booths through SAS. 

Lockable carrels on the 3rd and 4th floor can be reserved by Graduate Students for the semester and renewed for up to 2 years. To apply for a carrel, use the form available within MyTrent under Academics > Forms. 

Our group study rooms are perfect for small groups to brainstorm and work together. Book a room for up to 3 hours per day. You can reserve a room up to 30 days in advance. Be sure to book early during busy periods like exams and midterms. 

BL 207 – this is our extra-large group study room. Eighteen people can sit around a boardroom style table and the TV screen is quite large. It’s a great room for practicing presentations.

Our reading rooms are designed to provide a quiet and comfortable setting, equipped with adjustable tables and abundant plug points, making it easier for you to spend hours in the world of books. 

Graduate Student Study Room 

BL 408. Located on the 4th Floor, this room is for quiet study and reserved for Graduate Students only. If you are a grad student and want to gain access to this room, email keys@trentu.ca with your request and they will add tap access to your TrentU card. 

Giizhigaatig (Cedar) Room 

The Giizhigaatig Indigenous Learning Space, situated in the Bata Library, offers a picturesque view of the river and the southern landscape of the University. This space serves as a communal area for Indigenous students to meet, study, socialize, and hold meetings. Reservations for this space can be made through the Wenjack School. 

BL 202 (Elaine Stavro) Room 

A large, windowed room with tables and couches. Good for quiet reading or group meetings. Reservations for this space can be made here

BL 411 

a classroom style space ideal for larger meetings or small conferences. [Bookings for this space must be made through library staff.] 

Feeling overwhelmed? Visit our De-stress Zones—available at both Durham and Bata Libraries—where you can unwind and recharge. These areas are equipped with puzzles, beanbag chairs, and various relaxing activities. Whether you want to build with Lego, create friendship bracelets, or just chill out, our De-stress Zones are your go-to for mental rest and relaxation. 

Graduate students have access to a study room - BL408.  This room has tap card access that can be requested by emailing keys@trentu.ca

In addition to the open study space in BL408, individual and lockable study carrels are available to graduate students on a first-come first-served basis.  To request a carrel please complete the form online.  MyTrent > Academics > Forms.  A key will be on loan to you for a term, and can be picked up at the Library Service Desk. 

 

Guidelines for Graduate Study Carrel Use:

• Carrel assignments expire at the end of each term, but may be renewed for addition terms within Omni up to a maximum of 3 years. Failure to renew your carrel before the due date may result in it being assigned to another student.

• Carrel keys must be returned to the Bata Library Service desk or renewed online within Omni by the due date. Failure to do so will result in a late fee of $4 per day up to the maximum of $56.

• Overdue carrel keys not returned after 14 days are subject to a $25 lost item fee and a $125 replacement charge. Once the replacement charge has been applied to a student’s library account, the carrel will be cleared of all materials.

• The carrel is for use by the assigned graduate student and may not be sublet or shared with others. Any damage or defacing of the carrel will be the responsibility of the assigned student.

• Trent University Library & Archives (TULA) is not responsible for personal property left in the carrels.

• The student agrees that random carrel inspections will be performed by library staff.

• All library material left in the carrels must be signed out. Any library materials that have not been signed out or that are part of the non-circulating collections will be removed by library staff.

• In keeping with library policies designed to reduce waste and damage, please use lidded beverages only. Do not leave trash, recyclables, or any other items in your carrel that may attract pests. Deposit all waste or recyclables in receptacles.

• No furniture is to be moved into or out of the carrel. Nothing may be affixed to or block the glass in the door.

• Appliances that pose fire hazards, such as space heaters, coffee pots, hot plates, etc., are strictly prohibited in carrels. Excessive clutter or overfilling of the carrel with books or other materials is a safety hazard and is not permitted.

• Carrels may only be accessed and used when the library is open.

• A lost key must be reported immediately to Library Services.

• TULA reserves the right to revoke carrel privileges when these regulations are not followed.
