The need to address matters such as power imbalances and historical and contemporary gender and race bias in academia and in administrative systems and structures is a very real one given the nature of concerns that come through the doors of the Equity and Human Rights Office.
Research has shown that there are several forms of biases, conscious and unconscious and there is a natural tendency for Affinity Bias. Affinity bias refers to the tendency to favor people who share similar interests, backgrounds, and experiences. This bias may affect hiring decisions, and over time, the affinity bias in hiring can hamper a company’s diversity and inclusion efforts.
At Trent, our leaders have indicated that they are poised to lean in and do the work and put themselves in the seats of critical self-reflection to be able to have those difficult conversations and explore solutions together. For this Leadership session, we will hold a panel workshop that brings multiple players with varied lived experience and expertise to the table. Our main speaker will be renowned author, anthropologist, and "seven ticker", Joris Luyendijk. We will together explore intersectionality, especially of race and gender, and aim to understand why after generations they persist to shape the terrain as barriers to equity and access, power and privilege. At this session, we will juxtapose privilege and power with marginalization and powerlessness and take a deep dive via some very courageous conversations.
