Environmental Geoscience integrates the disciplines of geology, biology, chemistry and geography to study the interaction between human activities and earth systems. The program showcases Trent's strength and excellence in teaching and research in interdisciplinary environmental science. In Canada and many other countries, professional accreditation is a legal requirement for individuals working in the field of geoscience. The program curriculum has been carefully designed to satisfy the ‘minimum knowledge requirements’ of the ‘Environmental Geoscience’ stream identified by Geoscientists Canada. Students will receive strong foundational training in geoscience and develop breadth of knowledge in the other sciences.
Professional Accreditation
Geoscience is a regulated profession in Canada. The curriculum of the Environmental Geoscience (EGEO) Honours Bachelor of Science program has been carefully designed to satisfy the minimum knowledge requirements of the Geoscientists Canada Association, which includes 27 Education Units (EUs; ½ credits) or specific courses that are part of a four-year degree. The curriculum for Trent’s Environmental Geoscience BSc degree includes these 27 required half-credit courses, as well as additional courses that are needed to satisfy prerequisites.
The program guide (PDF updated May 23, 2023) includes the program requirements, recommended schedule, and Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO) requirements.

“Doing a placement was one of the most fruitful experiences I have had at Trent as an environmental geoscience student. I had the opportunity to work under a Professional Geoscientist at a multiservice consulting and engineering firm. Via this course, I was able to not only gain knowledge on the project I was assigned to, but I was also able to interact with other professionals in the company and learn about their projects. I learned so much about networking, report writing, fieldwork, and all-in-all just got an insight on what geoscience looks like outside of a university setting. I highly recommend students in any and all environmental majors to take this placement course.” – Jinal Somani
