Apply yourself in one of many practical laboratory courses and field studies, learning to identify specimens of minerals and rocks in nature and build skills in instrumentation, mapping, and measurement. Gain career experience through a fourth-year placement course, working as a geoscientist for a government agency, school, business, or consulting firm. Learn alongside expert faculty, including the Canada Research Chair in Environmental Geoscience who is advancing knowledge on sustainable mining practices. Advance knowledge in the field by designing and implementing your honours thesis research project in a subject such as mineralogy, geochemistry, sedimentary processes, hydrology, or soil science.
The program offers students:
- A strong foundation in core science disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematics and geography
- Specialized geoscience courses in field methods, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology and geophysics
- A broad education in earth and environmental science including courses in geochemistry, soil science, hydrology, and remote sensing
- Opportunities to gain research experience by completing an honours thesis with a leading expert in environmental geoscience and access to world-class analytical facilities
- Opportunities to gain work experience by completing a work-placement course
Student Testimonial
"The environmental geoscience program has been amazing! I love that there are so many different types of classes I have to take because it allows me to seek out so many different interests. Environmental geoscience is not about one thing; it is about using knowledge from many different perspectives to solve a single issue and that is what I love about it. This program prepares me for the future because I am exposed to so many different types of tools and skills that will be essential to careers in the field. The professors take into consideration what skill sets are needed for future careers, integrate that into the course and keep us aware of these points so that we can be working towards success. Ian Power's Field Methods in Environmental Geoscience has been my favourite class so far. He went out of his way to ensure this course would teach us basic field methods and even have the chance to try and solve environmental geoscience problems on a smaller scale. I love everything about the environmental geoscience program at Trent!" - Marguerite Sproxton
