This Alternative Settings Placement provides Teacher Candidates the unique opportunity to work with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) learners who are learning English in the Multilingual Language Learners (MLL) classroom at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School in Peterborough, Ontario. Selected Teacher Candidates will teach CLD learners in ways that are responsive to a variety of literacy proficiency levels (beginning stages of English language learning to advanced levels). As CLD students in need of one-on-one instruction are a priority in this ASP, Teacher candidates will plan lessons and units designed to meet the needs of the the learner they are working with in ways that are responsive to their proficiency levels.
Throughout the 75 hours of placement, Teacher Candidates will engage in whole class, small group and individual instruction in ways that address the needs of the class and individual learners. Selected Teacher Candidates will be provided with professional development and information that will allow them to understand and instructionally transfer their knowledge of how to respond to various literacy proficiency levels. Once the ASP is complete, participants will receive a report documenting their work and achievements throughout the ASP.
