1964 Gerald Adolphe '64 is working to complete a Doctorate of Science Education. He and his wife, Daniele moved to Australia in 1968 from their native Mauritius. He completed an M.Sc. and an M.Ed at the University of Sydney. He started a Ph.D. five years ago in Perth, Western Australia and is now hoping to complete it in Jakarta, Indonesia. Gerald and Daniele have three children, Jean Pierre, 31 is a Naval Officer with the Australian Navy, Janelle, 25 is married to Averne, a cricket player and musician and Jean Paul, 16 is finishing high school in Sydney. ey also have an eight year old granddaughter named Mercedes. 1974 Matthew Coon-Come '74 was elected as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. As a student, Matthew headed the Trent University Native Association. He received an honorary degree from Trent in 1998 for outstanding leadership in the advancement of native peoples. 1977 In October 1999, Julie Cormack '77 was an invited and keynote speaker at an international Anthropology conference in China, in honour of the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the Peking Man fossils. is invitation came as a result of her research and writing of a scientific biography on Dr. Davidson Black, the Canadian directly involved in the Peking Man excavations in the 1920s. 1980 Maureen Delaney '80, Christine (Skinner) Chappell '80, Terrie Strickland '80 and Leo Varlese '84 and Brenda Ross Cosens '80 got together just after Christmas to share some memories and introduce their children to each other. Who knows? Maybe one year they will all be at Trent just like their parents! Cassibo's whiz kids have also won international acclaim for their
previous projects in competitions in Ontario and the 1984 Nancy (Welsford) '85 and Vince O'Brien '84 would like to announce
the birth of Kathleen Elizabeth (Kate) born October 16, 1999
at York County Hospital, Newmarket. Kate is a new baby sister
for Harrison (six) and Holly (four). 1985 Chris Burke '85 is still living in Toronto and currently holds the position of Director of Marketing and Promotions for Schwinn Bicycles of Canada. Recent projects have included full brand partnership with Toyota Canada, television commercials with Bell and Harley Davidson, live events with TSN, CTV and Sportsnet and an award for 1999-2000 International Marketer of the Year from Schwinn Cycling and Fitness USA. Andrew Cross '85 completed an M.A. in English at queen's and has taught English in a variety of international settings, first Turkey, then Venezuela, and now Belgium where he has been teaching for a year in the International Baccalaureate programme. Andrew, his wife and four year old daughter visited Peterborough recently while traveling to avoid the Euro 2000 football tournament held in Belgium and Holland. 1987 Tammy Lawrence '87 married Lyle Cymbalisty in a ceremony on the Miss Toronto on June 10, 2000. Trent friends in attendance were Leanne Caldwell '87 and Geordie Robertson '86 along with their daughter India Hamony now six years old. Tammy is working with Special Needs adults in Richmond Hill. "Although I swore I would never change my last name, I decided on hyphenation; Lawrence-Cymbalisty, some things do change!"
1990 Brent and Julia (Jeacle) Easey '90 along with sons Isaac (three) and Joel (two) have returned to Ontario. Brent has been ordained as a Baptist minister and spent 3 years ministering in a church by the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia before accepting a position at Villa Nova Baptist Church near Waterford, Ontario. Julia has kept busy with the two little boys and helping Brent. You can get their updated e-mail address on the new Trent On-Line Directory. 1991 Suresh Narine '91 has been awarded his second NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship. 1992 Eli Fellman '92 has, at last, finished his formal education! He completed an L.L.B. at the University of Ottawa and an M.A. at Carleton and has started articling in Ottawa. Eli and Liz Scanlon '92 recently became engaged to be married. On July 24, 1999, Karin Penny '92 married Todd Nie in Orillia. ey met while studying for B.Ed. degrees in Buffalo. Karin's best friend from Trent, Kerri-Ann Cooper '92, shared the maid of honour duties with Karin's sister Kristi. Chris and Melanie Lee '92 also attended the festivities. Karin and Todd are both teaching in Orilla and are looking forward to Kerri-Ann's wedding on August 12, 2000. 1993 Kerry Colpitts '93 received a master's degree in Public Administration at queen's after leaving Trent. She finished the M.A. with a thesis on ballistic missile defense, and authored a major program review policy initiative for the Ministry of Health before being hired by the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. Kerry is now the deputy press secretary for online services having managed to turn an ability to write, a passion for politics and the internet skills learned while researching her thesis into a great job! 1994 Katy Wright '94 is working in Ottawa as communications and legislative assistant to NDP MP Michelle Dockrill. 1995 Rachel Moll '95 has just completed a year at McArthur College, queen's University and has been awarded an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship to continue her studies in physics.
Honorary Alumni... Thomas H.B. Symons continues to be very busy. He has agreed to extend his term as Chairman of the National Statistics Council and is the Honourary Chairman of the Market Hall Committee, a group established in the City of Peterborough to raise funds to preserve the local and nationally significant Market Hall with its magnificent clock tower. Jalynn Bennett, immediate past chair of the Trent University Board of Governors, has been named a member of the Order of Canada. As a member of the Board and as its Chair, Jalynn was very supportive of the Alumni Association and its activities. The citation describes Jalynn as "an expert in investment strategy..." and notes "She has contributed to Canadian public policy as a Director of the Bank of Canada and as a member of numerous federal and provincial commissions. Further, she demonstrates a commitment to community service and higher education, sharing her expertise with non-profit and educational institutions." Mary Walsh received an honorary degree from Trent for contributions to the performing arts in Canada at the 1998 Convocation ceremony and was also named to the Order of Canada. She is an actor, writer, director, political satirist and appears on the CBC-TV series This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Ms. Walsh's citation notes "...she is a committed activist who has supported the St. John's Resource Centre of the Arts and Oxfam Canada's recent campaign for human rights." |
