What are Threshold Concepts and How Do You Teach Them Within Your Discipline
'Threshold Concepts', the point where students get 'stuck' in their disciplinary learning or the level a student needs to pass to be able to truly understand a discipline-specific concept, is a cutting edge discussion in university teaching. Threshold concept theory is a valuable tool, not only in facilitating students' understanding of their subject but in aiding course design when there is a strong tendency to overload the curriculum. This session will explore how to establish the threshold concepts within your course. What do students need to know now in their disciplines?

Recognizing Excellence: Teaching Awards and Teaching Fellowships
There are many ways in which excellence in teaching and educational leadership is recognized and celebrated. This workshop explores the various types of teaching awards available to the Trent teaching community, including the criteria, process, and timelines for provincial, national, and discipline-specific awards, and the significant supports offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Trent Teaching Fellowships will also be discussed, with a particular focus on the selection process, and the preparation of successful applicants.
