Project Details
Location
The Student Centre will be situated on the west bank of the Otonabee River between the Bata Library and the Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre. The green circle in the aerial view below identifies the approximate site. Designed to connect with the beautiful, existing architecture at Trent University – aesthetic honours the historic Ron Thom architecture of the Symons Campus, while offering a new space for students to learn and thrive on campus
Design
The request for proposal (RFP) for architectural design services was issued on Monday, December 8, 2014. Noting “Trent’s commitment to architecture that has an organic connection to the landscape and inspires interactive learning and collegial communities,” the RFP sought proposals that address not only the specific uses envisioned for the centre, but called for ‘inspired architecture’ that complements the adjacent facilities and Ron Thom architecture, promotes sustainable development, achieves at minimum the LEED silver standard, and is responsive to the diversity of the student body. Teeple Architects, whose work on the campus includes the chemical sciences building and the child care centre, won the project.
