A mature student with a family, Mr. Justin Sutton gradually cultivated an interest in history and returned to school after a decade as a Canadian television producer. His research has contributed to his desire to combine his media background with a history degree that will inform his future studies in policy and organizational communication at York University.

Michaela M. Brooks '08 B.A.H., Sociology, Peterborough ON
Sociology graduate Michaela M. Brooks plans to work with female youth in First Nations communities in the James Bay/Hudson Bay area. She also plans to continue to recruit First Nations Foster Families for First Nations Children in the care of the Children’s Aid Society.

Award winning Trent University Ph.D. graduate Stephen Oni ’07 is already working towards practical solutions for the planet. Currently working with researchers in Sweden, Dr. Oni is examining water quality in the northern boreal forest in Sweden.

Full-time, mature student and mom, Trent University Oshawa graduate Jan Rivett attributes her success in obtaining an Honours B.A. to the faculty and community at the Thornton Road campus.

M.A. graduate in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies, Mr. Andy Cragg gained confidence in expressing his views and in public speaking during his time at Trent University. He is committed to his research regarding the treatment of immigrants and national policy infrastructures. By observing and researching the changes, during his own lifetime, in a variety of public institutions, he has gained a broad knowledge of how Canada’s political/economic environment has changed over the years.

Elizabeth Morrison '08, B.S.H. Biology, Peterborough ON
Symons Medal Recipient
Winning the Symons Medal for overall high standing upon graduation from Trent University, Elizabeth Morrison will be graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology. With a long list of awards under her name already, Ms. Morrison says that Trent facilitated change in how she looks at the world. Elizabeth is a community volunteer who works with children in her free time. She intends to pursue graduate work at Trent and explore her interests in virology and immunology.

Kavetha Krishnan '08, Bachelor of Arts (General), Malaysia
Bagnani Medal Recipient
Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, Kavetha Krishnan will be presented at Convocation with the Bagnani Medal for overall high standing in the general program. During her time at Trent she became passionate about the field of psychology; a discipline she feels is not as well known of in Malaysia. Women’s Studies and Sociology courses at Trent have also contributed to and cultivated her desire to do interesting work in the future.

Andrea Storm wants to contribute to the goals of conservation science, where she can work to rehabilitate individuals affected by human disturbance. With her love of nature and wildlife, she has cultivated a fascination for veterinary medicine and a passion in particular for avian migratory routes.

Shirin Nuesslein arrived in 2008 from Hassfurt Germany to receive a full scholarship at Trent University, to pursue her Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Development Studies and Environmental and Resource Studies/Science. Her passions for learning, reflecting and meaningful conversations kept her engaged in the community, organizing events such as the Community Movements Conference in 2012 on “Food Sovereignty and the Changing Face of Agriculture.”

Graeme Young, M.Sc. Applications of Modelling in Natural and Social Sciences, Thompson MB
Graeme Young’s glimmer of interest in the creation of computer games during his high school years has developed into a passion for developing complex software that can be of used within a wide variety of disciplines. A special interest in the use of evolutionary algorithms as a problem-solving tool, and related biological processes, has sparked his desire to contribute to diverse areas within the natural and social sciences.

Bagnani Medal Recipient
Having been involved in a variety of diverse Trent organizations that have expanded her community awareness, Margaret Donaldson-Kuntz plans to continue to expand awareness of the benefits of aromatherapy through her self-employment as a writer, while continuing to teach at the college level.

Parwana Ahmad '08, B.A. International Development Studies and Political Science, Afghanistan, Kabul
Parwana Ahmad plans to utilize humanitarian and sustainable development values she learned at Trent University, in order to contribute to change – globally and in her own country. Her work with Professor Paul Shafer has inspired her to contribute to worldwide awareness regarding the nature of poverty and its economic and social causes.

Rachel Herron '09, Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies M.A., Tara ON
Rachel Herron’s initial interests in geography and English evolved, with the support of enthusiastic professors, into a particular interest in the places people live and women’s experiences of care-giving on farms. Ms. Herron credits the Academic Skills Centre as part of her success, where she found support for her work and people who were interested in what she was doing.

Drawing on his experience having grown up in a rural area, Canadian Studies graduate Brett Throop has concerns regarding global, social, and ecological well-being. Using his research to take responsibility for the ways in which we shape the environment we live in, Mr. Throop values creativity and self-reflection as crucial parts of any given life and career.

Brianna Salmon, M.A. Sustainability Studies, Orillia ON
Trent University’s Brianna Salmon is one of two in the first graduating class of the Master of Arts in Sustainability Studies of 2012. Ms. Salmon’s interest in sustainable transportation was piqued while working at local Peterborough Green Up. Her research at the master’s level in the Sustainability program allowed her to “meaningfully engage members of the Trent and Peterborough communities in the development of strategies to increase the viability of cycling at Symons campus.”
