2012 Graduate Profiles

Andrea Storm-Suke '06, Ph.D. Environmental & Life Sciences, Thunder Bay ON

Andrea Storm wants to contribute to the goals of conservation science, where she can work to rehabilitate individuals affected by human disturbance. With her love of nature and wildlife, she has cultivated a fascination for veterinary medicine and a passion in particular for avian migratory routes.

How will you make a difference with your Trent degree?
My love of nature and wildlife remains, along with my strong commitment to help protect the flora and fauna so vulnerable to the impacts of human disturbance. However, throughout the course of my field studies, I became increasingly aware of the immediate needs of wildlife and the importance of wildlife rehabilitation to current conservation efforts. This awareness has lead me to refocus my career path towards veterinary medicine where I can work to rehabilitate individuals that have already been affected by human disturbance while continuing to contribute to the goals of conservation science.

What is the best thing about studying at Trent?
There were many good things about studying at Trent. In particular, I found the support and help of the many incredible staff members such as Linda Cardwell and Debbie Leitz to be invaluable. In addition, the banks of the beautiful Otonabee River always provided a much-needed site of respite during a busy day/hectic day.

Interests and passions:
I have always been interested in nature and wildlife. In particular, I have found avian migration fascinating. For many bird species, migration is like a ‘black box’. We know very little about where specific populations of breeding birds go in the winter and what routes they are taking to get there.
