Jan Rivett '09, B.A.H. English Literature, Enfield ON
Full-time, mature student and mom, Trent University Oshawa graduate Jan Rivett attributes her success in obtaining an Honours B.A. to the faculty and community at the Thornton Road campus.
“I chose Trent because it was close to home, but the experience was so much more than I could have expected,” said Ms. Rivett.
How will you make a difference with your Trent degree, and what are your future goals?
I love learning. I know that I am a lifelong learner and that I will continue with my education after Trent. I have learned so many things with my degree. It has definitely prepared me for studies at the graduate level.
Why did you choose Trent?
I live on a farm with my husband and sons. Life on a farm with family and school has been pretty busy. I chose Trent because it was close to home, but the experience was so much more than I could have expected. I was a full-time mom before returning to school. I have had incredible support from my husband of 20 years and my two sons. My family has put up with many nights of take-out during the writing of all of those essays for English and History. I am graduating this year because of their love and support.
What is the best thing about studying at Trent?
The faculty and staff were always there to help. It was such a personal experience. Trent wants their students to succeed. I have had such an amazing experience at Trent. All of my professors have been great teachers and mentors. I could not single out one individual because they have all influenced the success I have been able to achieve in my studies.
Volunteer Work:
I have spent my time at Trent involved in the peer mentoring program and also with TESSO (Trent English Student Society Oshawa). This year I was the president and enjoyed many events as part of the Trent community.
