“Being involved in two programs simultaneously offered me the chance to explore my artistic and scientific side,” says Amy Jane Vosper, a Cultural Studies and Psychology graduate. Attaining both an Honours Bachelor of Science and an Honours Bachelor of Arts at the same time may seem a little unconventional for some students, but for Amy Jane it makes perfect sense.

“Psychology provided me with an understanding of human behaviour, while my arts education allowed me to express myself and learn how to appreciate and incorporate the perspectives of others in my work,” she explains.

With such a diverse set of interests, Amy Jane found Trent’s interdisciplinary programming a perfect fit. Originally from nearby Fenelon Falls, she also chose Trent for its location. Growing up in a small town, moving into Peterborough’s close community felt like a natural progression. Recalling the reasons she chose to come to Trent, Amy Jane says, “I fell in love with the campus – the beautiful river, endless greenery and picturesque landscape. All at once, I knew I was home.”

Since arriving at Trent to pursue her two degrees in 2004, Amy Jane has made lasting friendships with students and faculty, relationships she says she will not soon forget. “It’s not always easy to find others whose interests parallel your own, but at Trent I met these people every day,” she says. “I will treasure forever the exposure I’ve had to intelligent, thoughtful and compassionate minds, and will cherish the relationships I’ve built with my professors. These educators are inspirational and it’s been an indescribable honour to work closely with several members of the faculty.”

When she moves on to graduate school in the fall, Amy Jane plans to focus her studies on constructing a psychological history of drama. “I would like to explore how the psychological states of a given society are reflected in their art,” she says.

And as she moves forward in her academic career, she takes a piece of Trent with her: “Trent taught me that there are several sides to every story. I learned to critically approach information and to not be afraid to ask questions,” she says. “I’ve been given the tools to build my future and I look forward to getting started.”
