Education
Krista Pickard is the kind of person who knows exactly what she wants and has the drive and dedication to make it happen. Since high school, Krista has had dreams of becoming a teacher, and her first step towards that goal was enrolling at Trent.
First completing her undergraduate degree in History at Trent, Krista also recently completed her Bachelor of Education degree at the University as well.
“I am a very driven and dedicated individual,” she says. “I have worked very hard to finally reach my ultimate goal of graduating the bachelor of education program at Trent.”
Knowing that she wanted to become a teacher made it easy for Krista to choose Trent for her post-secondary education. “Trent’s history and education programs are great,” she says, “The B.Ed. program is nothing short of the best; the amount of practicum experience I’ve had has prepared me for my teaching career. The outstanding Indigenous Studies program has also allowed me to bring traditional and cultural learning into my placement.”
Being passionate about teaching and educating youth has also influenced many of Krista’s extracurricular activities. She has been a Trent Penpal, advocating literacy among elementary school students, helped organize events raising money for Tanzanian children affected with AIDS/HIV, dedicated her time to Relay for Life, and has been active in developing Aboriginal culture programs in the community. She also helped organize the Aboriginal Women’s Symposium at Trent and is currently organizing an Aboriginal Culture Day for students and community members. Giving back to her hometown, Peterborough, Ontario, has been important.
“I am passionate about being involved in social justice and community-based projects and activities,” she says. “Trent’s faculty and associate teachers have been the backbone of many of the community events and organizations I’ve been involved in. Being a Trent student gives you a wonderful opportunity to get involved.”
Full of excited energy to begin her long-awaited career as a teacher, Krista says she will always be thankful to Trent and its faculty. “I am fully prepared for my teaching career,” she says, adding that she is truly going to miss Trent. “Leaving Trent is going to be bitter sweet for me. I’ve met life-long friends and my experience has helped shaped the person I am today.”
