Carolyn Watters

Bowmanville, Ontario
Psychology, Trent University in Oshawa
Symons Medal Winner

Always passionate about learning, Carolyn Watters opted to return to school after 12 years of working in the mental health field for a variety non-profit and community organizations. Her path to becoming a Psychology student at Trent University in Oshawa began once she started a research position with her mentor and part-time Trent professor, Dr. Margaret Hogan.

Carolyn’s interest in the research side of mental health led her to where she is today – a new Trent graduate who has, at long last, found a field that interests her and challenges her to continually pursue bigger goals.

“I’m so happy to find a career path that I will really enjoy,” says Carolyn, who attributes her continued keen interest in mental health research to bringing her to Trent, where she has learned from inspiring professors in intimate classroom environments.

“I would sincerely like to thank Dr. Marjorie Hogan, Dr. Teresa DeCicco, Dr. James Parker, and Dr. Laura Page for their guidance and mentorship throughout my undergraduate degree at Trent,” she says.  “I would also like to thank my family and friends, who have been so supportive of my decision to return to academics as a mature student!”

As an outstanding Trent student, Carolyn has been awarded a 2009 Symons Medal for academic excellence. For Carolyn, it was a deep honour and surprise to be recognized this way at Convocation.

Now at the end of one Trent path, Carolyn is preparing to take on her next challenge as a graduate student in Trent’s master’s program in Applications of Modelling in the Natural & Social Sciences. Afterwards she sees the possibility of doctorate work on positive psychology and even the idea of coming back to Trent once again, this time as a professor.
