Philosophy
“Studying at Trent has improved my life,” says new Trent Philosophy graduate Jonathan Life. “I think it will be very rewarding to be able to have the same affect on future undergraduate students that Trent professors have had on me.”
A self-described comedian, who never takes life too seriously, Jonathan describes studying philosophy as a “forever humbling experience.” He says: “One is constantly confronted with what one doesn’t know, or with what seems no one knows. It’s impossible to take one’s self too seriously in the face of the mysteries of the universe.”
As a Trent student, Jonathan took advantage of opportunities to get involved in student life. He was a student representative for the Philosophy Department, a test and essay marker for an introductory course, and he presented papers every year at the Trent Philosophy Student Symposium. He is also the editor of the humanities for the Journal of Undergraduate Studies at Trent. Outside of Trent, Jonathan spends time developing another of his life’s passions – music. “I play guitar basically every day and I even use it to help my creative process when writing academic papers,” he says.
In September, Jonathan will start a master’s program in Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, and has plans to pursue a Ph.D. and start a career as a university professor.
