Eric Brown

Orono, Ontario
Physics, minor in Mathematics
Symons Medal Winner

Starting out as a student in the Concurrent Education program, Eric Brown took advantage of the flexible and interdisciplinary nature of Trent to explore a variety of courses. In doing so, Eric found his true passion and changed his major to Physics.

“I had discovered a love of physics that I wished to cultivate during and after my time here,” says Eric, who is now officially a member of the most recent class of Physics graduates.

Looking back, Eric feels his love of physics actually started in high school but it wasn’t until he got to Trent that he realized his zeal for the subject matter. “I feel deeply privileged to have found an intellectual practice that I love, excel in and can make a career out of performing,” he says.

Gaining the most out of his Trent experience, Eric was an avid member of the Trent Physics Club (TPC) for the past three years and even became president of the club in his last year at Trent. As president, he organized a very successful interdepartmental seminar and discussion, which brought together the Physics, History, and Political Science departments to discuss the topic of the evolution of nuclear technology and its implications for humanity.

According to Eric, being involved in the TPC and the overall academic environment at Trent has groomed him into the person he is today. He also attributes the people he has met at Trent, both friends and professors, as making an impact on his life. “The department creates a wonderful learning environment that I feel was central in the development of my passion for physics,” he says.

For all of his hard work and dedication to his academics, Eric was awarded a Symons Medal at convocation. Reflecting on the recognition, he says, “I am honored to be recognized for my success, it is always nice to know that people are noticing your efforts.”

With plans to continue studying Physics, Eric will pursue a master’s degree in theoretical physics at the University of Waterloo starting in the Fall before possibly moving on to complete a Ph.D.
