Psychology, Trent University in Oshawa
With a love of psychology and research, Constance Mara will be right at home when she goes on to pursue a graduate degree in social and personality psychology next year.
Why did you choose Trent?
For the proximity of the Oshawa Campus to home, and the reputation of the psychology program.
How would you describe yourself? How would others describe you? What are your passions in life?
I have been horseback riding and working with horses since I was seven years old. I have taught riding lessons and trained horses, as well as participated in small competitions; but mostly I ride for sport. I also play tennis recreationally, and have recently taken up squash.
Others might say I am pretty easy going, kind, easy to get along with, motivated and precise. I love psychology and researching. I definitely picked the right subject for my personality and aspirations! I am also a huge fan of anthropology, evolution and animal behaviour…so fascinating!
Have you been involved in any clubs, groups, and/or sports at Trent? If so, which ones?
I have been a peer mentor in Oshawa for two years. As a peer mentor, I “coach” fellow students on their courses, what to expect from their university experience, how to get involved, and I have assisted many students with information about applying to graduate school. In addition, I have had the opportunity to organize several workshops on the Oshawa campus. I have also tutored in statistics for psychology, at the introductory and advanced levels, for the last two years. Finally, I was a teaching assistant/student marker this year for four different classes, which was excellent experience for my future career!
What has your time at Trent meant to you? What are some of your favourite memories? What will you take with you from Trent?
The small campus at Trent in Oshawa has afforded me a great deal of opportunity that I don’t think I would have received anywhere else. The small class sizes really make it easy to get to know fellow students, even on a commuter campus, as well becoming familiar with professors and participating in lectures. The diversity of age groups in the classes in Oshawa lends a different perspective on issues that you might not otherwise think about! Getting into my academic career, getting good references for graduate school applications, and finding opportunities for experience in my field has been abundant, and I attribute this luck to the Trent in Oshawa community.
What are your future plans and aspirations? What do you hope to accomplish?
I have been accepted to York University’s Master’s program in social and personality psychology, with a specialization in quantitative methodology, for September 2008. I plan on continuing for my PhD and becoming a professor of psychology, as well as actively researching in the field.
I am really excited about the research opportunities I am about to embark upon, and becoming more involved in academia!
