As a genius in Universal Design, Thom naturally designed a significant amount of furniture specifically for Trent, Massey College, and his west-coast houses. The owners have kept most of the original furniture to preserve the grandeur meant for each space. In Thom’s furniture repertoire you will see a lot of built-in benches, tables, and desks. Thom believed that this made you more a part of the conversation piece that the building itself conjugated.Thom’s designs came in many different shapes and sizes, but if you know the right traits to look for they are virtually unavoidable.
Thom always used the best materials available to construct his pieces, using dovetail joints and other complicated construction methods to differentiate his pieces. Thom was famous for using longer lines and more prism-like pieces than the joint actually needed, so as to accentuate the height and creativity of the infrastructure. An example of this type of construction is the “Copp House” Table, used in one of Thom’s west-coast masterpieces.
