José González Güel is the Human Rights Advisor for the Equity and Human Rights Office at Trent University. He is a bi-national lawyer trained in both Common Law and Civil Law, admitted to practice in Ontario and Mexico. He has maintained memberships with the Law Society of Ontario since 2014 and the Mexican bar since 2001.
José has extensive experience advising and representing clients across a diverse range of legal areas, including discrimination and harassment, criminal law offences, quasi-criminal offences, compliance, contracts, academic appeals, civil litigation, and tax law. He has successfully appeared before various Ontario courts and tribunals.
He holds a Master's degree in Law from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and a dual Bachelor's degree in Law and Social Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) in Mexico. Currently, he is pursuing a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in Finance from Niagara University, further enhancing his expertise.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, José serves as a member of the Board of Directors at the Durham Region Law Association and previously chaired the Ombuds Committee at Toronto Metropolitan University. He is actively involved in local outreach efforts and promotes cross-cultural understanding and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion through his proficiency in multiple languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian.
José will join the Trent Board of Governors, occupying a Staff seat for a two-year term, commencing July 1, 2024.
