Postgraduate Certificates and the new Field of Study Requirement
Trent postgraduate certificates (PGCs) are aligned with the new field of study requirement outlined by the Government of Canada by Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes. Upon completion of an in-person PGC, you will be eligible to apply for a postgraduate work permit (PGWP). The duration of your PGWP corresponds to the length of your academic program and can range from eight months to a maximum of three years, following the guidelines set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Our 2-year certificate programs qualify graduates to apply for the maximum 3-year PGWP.
Qualifying Canadian work experience accrued while holding a PGWP can be used towards applications for permanent residence. A PGWP is a practical way to apply what you’ve learned at Trent, advance your professional goals, and gain Canadian work experience, which you might need to qualify for certain permanent resident programs. For the most up-to-date information regarding Canadian immigration policy, please refer to IRCC’s webpage.
When applying to a postgraduate certificate program, please ensure that you select the exact program and campus that you wish to study at. Be sure to research the program length, courses, and available start terms and campuses prior to submitting your application.
After submitting your application, changes to programs and campuses will not be made without a new, paid application.
Once you are registered in courses, changes cannot be made to your program or campus.
