Panel Description

Canada’s Role in the World” has, for many, changed greatly over the past few years. Our military presence is again one of active combatant  -  our “good guys” against their “bad guys”. Yet our international involvement continues to go far beyond the military. We shall look at the varied activities of Canada’s diplomatic, security, and humanitarian communities as they search for appropriate ways in which Canada and Canadians can and should engage in the world.

Panel Description

Trent graduates are found throughout the “Performing, Visual, and Media Arts”. And they have very strong views on how the future    -    for better or worse   -   is likely to look, both for the artists and their endeavours. What will be the institutional and legal underpinnings of artistic work in the future? When it is expected that many forms of artistic expression should be available for “free”, how will artists promote and sell their works? In the “1000 channel universe”, to what extent have markets and audiences become so fragmented that few artists will be able to succeed? Or, does that very fragmentation mean that there is ever more space for ever more artists to be seen, enjoyed, and supported?

Panel Description

Public Discourse” used to mean that elites passed information down, with citizens responding (or not) via everything from purchasing decisions to elections. Expectations around the nature and breadth of such discourse have now changed radically. Social media and other new and expanded forms of communication have upset former notions of where, when, and how “discourse” should take place, who should manage it, and what its results should be. Our panelists will bring insights from political, academic, not-for-profit, and business environments to discuss where public discourse is headed and what its implications will be.
