“Studying atmospheric impacts on remote acid sensitive lakes in Ireland was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. The Environmental & Life Sciences Graduate Program at Trent University provided me with the opportunities to improve my scientific knowledge and research skills while meeting new friends with similar interests.”
- Andrew Burton, M.Sc. graduate student
"I am an ENLS student that started my M.Sc. in 2013. From then, I went through the transfer process to convert my M.Sc. to a Ph.D. and am currently 3 years in. During my time at Trent, the ENLS program has provided me with many unique opportunities such as the chance to apply for unique scholarships, travel to numerous conferences, and publish my research in scientific journals. Graduate Studies and the ENLS staff have been very supportive and extremely knowledgeable and have made my graduate student experience very enjoyable." Vaughn is now Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Brock University.
- Vaughn Mangal, Ph.D. graduate student
"As a first generation student I wasn’t sure whether the university environment was right for me, but I always felt welcome and comfortable because the professors and support staff were available and friendly. I did not plan to pursue research at the graduate level, but Dr. Céline Guéguen encouraged me to undertake undergraduate research as a summer student and helped me to secure financial support through NSERC and the Northern Scientific Training Program. She provided me with the opportunity to spend six weeks doing research on a Canadian icebreaker in the Northwest Passage and Arctic Ocean. It was very empowering and encouraging to find out that I could understand and do the same work as real scientists! Suddenly I began to feel like I belonged. Céline also allowed me to work with brand new, cutting-edge instruments as an undergraduate student. The experience that I gained using this instrumentation continues to be a major focus in my postdoctoral position. Linda and Mary Lynn were very supportive throughout my graduate studies, and helped me to tailor my courses so that I could gain the knowledge that I needed to take my research in new directions. I am very grateful for the financial support that I have received during my graduate studies through various scholarships and research fellowships; I likely would not have pursued graduate research if there had also been a financial burden. My experience has been so transformative and revealing that I am now driven to pursue a professorship, primarily to empower and support other first generation students as they pursue their own dreams through university." Chad is now Assistant Professor of Environmental Science (Inorganic Chemistry/Geochemistry) at Memorial University.
- Chad Cuss, Ph.D. graduate student
