Environmental & Life Sciences Graduate Program (ENLS) Seminar Series
The Environmental and Life Sciences Graduate Program hosts a weekly seminar series in which ENLS faculty, graduate students, and external speakers present their research. Notification of dates and times are distributed by email. If you would like to receive email notifications, please let us know at enlsgrad@trentu.ca.
International Graduate Student Online Seminar Series
The IIES and Trent University Environmental and Life Science Graduate Program offers multiple International Graduate Student Online Seminar Series throughout each year! Leading researchers from around the globe offer series of free weekly online lectures on specific themes. The e-lectures are broadcasted live to a wide international audience, offering participants the collective insight of the speakers as well as the opportunity to network with people from other countries. Each session will feature a 45-minute talk from a guest speaker, which is then followed by an online discussion with the audience, providing an opportunity for participants from around the world to ask questions and gain insight on the topic.
The series explores topics within environmental sciences as they relate to global environmental issues. Topics include:
- Novel Analytical and Applied Technologies
- Water, Land, and Atmosphere Interactions
- Ecological Issues and Biodiversity
- Environmental Protection and Management
- Aquatic System Modeling and Management
- Contaminant Sources, Fate, and Mitigation
This seminar series provides an exclusive opportunity for graduate students around the world to gain experience in presenting their research to an international audience. At the end of each session, the facilitated dialogue will provide a forum for graduate students to exchange ideas on the session theme. This series offers a space for postgraduate students to share ideas and questions freely, providing a unique collaborative learning environment. The series is an opportunity for those who have participated in other IIES events to continue to develop their connections with colleagues from partner institutions, and an opportunity for newcomers to start to build these relationships.
The series is FREE and available to anyone who wishes to participate. Upon registration, participants will receive the series link to be used each week. Please register online.
Current Microplastics Seminar Series:
Microplastics in the Environment
The IIES is pleased to offer a FREE online seminar series focusing on Microplastics in the Environment. The series runs every Wednesday from October 4 to December 13 at 8:00am EDT (GMT -04:00). Each week join a speaker from one of the contributing universities or organizations who will share their research and expertise. Lectures run approximately 45 mins with a short Q&A to follow. The talks are FREE and available to anyone interested.
Of the 7 billion tonnes of plastic waste produced globally, less than 10% has been recycled (UNEP). While there is a huge problem with plastic waste generally, more recently researchers have begun to identify problems associated with microplastics, i.e. very small particles of plastic that are either released directly to the environment or are formed in situ. In this lecture series we will hear from leading experts from different countries and different research backgrounds on the issues associated with microplastics including analytical challenges, distribution and fate in different environments, potential health effects for humans and other biota and some possible solutions to the problem. Join us to learn in detail about the most current research in this rapidly evolving area of study.
