I have no prior First Aid experience. Can I still join TUEFRT?
Yes! We will teach you everything you need to know during the tryout weekend! If you make the team, you will be certified in SFA (Standard First Aid) and CPR-BLS. Later, you will receive certification in Emergency First Responder and Emergency Medical Responder. All of this training is covered by the team and there are no costs associated with joining. For more information, see our "Join Us" page or email us at tuefrt@trentu.ca.
What is the time commitment for each TUEFRT responder?
It is expected that each member be available to be on-call once a week as well as be able to attend monthly training sessions. Members are scheduled according to their provided availability. However while on-call, members can: attend classes, do other activities or remain in our office. They are expected to be able to immediately respond if dispatched. If they can not leave certain classes or are unavailable during a certain time (i.e Labs and seminars) they are expected to indicate their unavailability.
Are responders paid for their time?
No, all members are volunteers and are not compensated for their service. However; all certifications, uniforms, and other responder development opportunities are provided to the team. Some shifts such as the overnight and the weekend on-call team receives a $13 meal.
Do I have to be in a specific program to join?
No, students from any program can tryout for the team!
