1984 After many years as a senior citizen part-time student at Trent - graduating in 1996 - Georgia Elston, while winding down Waapoone Publishing after producing seven books by First Nation writers, has been honoured by having a quotation from one included in a prestigious academic text. Indigenous Traditions and Ecology: The Interbeing of Cosmology and Community, distributed by Harvard University Press for the Center for the Study of World Religions, Harvard Divinity School, includes a chapter by Harvey A. Feit, Professor of Anthropology at McMaster University. Professor Feit's chapter is titled, "Hunting, Nature and Metaphor: Political Discursive Strategies in James Bay Cree Resistance and Autonomy," in which he quotes Cree author Margaret Sam-Cromarty's poems, "Garden" and "Seven Steps" included in her book, James Bay Memoirs: A Cree Woman's Ode to her Homeland, published by Waapoone. After completing the editing of From Nelsons Falls to Lakefield: A History of the Village in time for Lakefield's 125th Anniversary in 1999, Georgia now hopes to find time to write some of her own material examining relations between non-Native and First Nations people. Although taking time off from courses at Trent, probably the call of the campus will lure her back.
