Kate Ramsay '71 YEARS AT TRENT : 1971-76 MAJOR : English with subsequent emphases in Canadian Studies and Geography COLLEGE : Catharine Parr Traill and Peter Robinson FAVOURITE COURSES & PROFESSORS : Canadian Studies 200 - John Wadland; Geography - John Marsh and Fred Helleiner, English - Gordon Roper and Geoffrey Eathorne, History - Stu Robson EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WHILE AT TRENT : After Four Program, hung out with the Gilbert and Sullivan group, 19th Century Society (bought the sherry and port!), Champlain College Head Search Committee, English department committee HOMETOWN : Ottawa - followed the footsteps of brother Jamie Benidickson '67 to Trent. Attracted by small group teaching, freshness and difference from Queen's and U of T CAREER PATH : Crooked! Field and office work for Mines Branch, Mineral Resources for government of Manitoba; Sunshine Coast construction (where Kate learned to use a chainsaw) and respite care for disabled; thanks to Trent and the presence of friends - moved back to the Kawarthas to Roscarrock Farm (sheep) in 1979; now a community volunteer (and retired sheep farmer) FAMILY : Married Alex Ramsay in 1986; two daughters Martha 12 and Leigh 9 MOTIVATION : involved now because the University is "taking off" and "moving forward" despite a difficult period of introspection. Very, very impressed with President Bonnie Patterson's leadership. It is critical to continue to sustain and support institutions like Trent where critical thinkers (who can operate "outside the box") emerge and bring a broad based understanding of issues to their decision-making OTHER VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES : Pre-amalgamation Chair of Lakefield Police Board, Chair of Imagine the Marsh, Ontario Adult Literacy Society, Lakefield Cooperative Nursery School, Ridpath School Council, Friends of Kinark, Lakefield Agricultural Society, Ontario Sheep Association, Children's Stage Lakefield, Performing Arts Lakefield TRENT VOLUNTEER ROLES : Alumni Councillor, Beyond Our Walls Campaign volunteer POINT OF PRIDE AS A TRENT VOLUNTEER : I am very humble about my Trent roles since I really just started. I am enormously proud of our little University and its apparent willingness to move forward. My years at Trent influenced my thinking about things ever since - more than any other body of experience. |
