High Impact Practice (HIPs) are specific teaching practices that can be incorporated into any course. Kuh, O'Donnell, and Schneider (2017) identified 11 instructional practices which are considered ‘high-impact’ because they have been shown to foster student success. The research findings included: improved academic achievement, engagement in educationally purposeful activities, student satisfaction, and student persistence.
The Eleven High-Impact Practices
- First year seminars and experiences
- Common Intellectual Experiences
- Learning Communities
- Writing- and Inquiry- Intensive Courses
- Collaborative Assignments and Projects
- Undergraduate Research
- Diversity/Study Away/Global Learning
- Service Learning, Community-Based Learning
- Internships and Field Experiences
- Capstone Courses and Projects
- ePortfolios
Another example of a high impact practice that is currently being explored at Trent University is collaborative test-taking.
