The SO understands that there is much information about the environment and sustainability related to Trent's Campus. In this section, we strive to provide ready access to that information. If you know of a helpful report that we don't have listed, please let us know.
Green Metric - Trent submitted to the World Green Metric in 2018 for the first time in 2017 and received a ranking of 73rd of all participating universities. We participated in this program from 2017 to 2021, placing anywhere from 66th to 133rd. We are currently not participating in this program as we shift staff time to priorities in carbon planning.
Sustainability Plan - In 2018, Trent published its first Sustainability Plan using guidelines provided by the provincial government. We have revised and released a 2024 Sustainability and Energy Plan that focuses on goals for achieving a net-zero campus.
Energy Reporting - Under Regulation 397/11, Trent University was required to provide annual energy use data to the provincial government. When the Green Energy Act was repealed, this reporting continued under O.Reg. 507/18: Broader Public Sector: Reporting and Conservation and Demand Management Plans.
Under these regulations, Trent was required to institute a 2014 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan. These reports must be updated on a five-year cycle, and you can read our subsequent 2019 ECDMP here. For 2024, we have combined sustainability and energy planning for a stronger position on carbon reductions. Our strategies for energy are included in our 2024 Sustainability and Energy Plan, with more detailed implementation to follow.
* Please note that we report on data from two years prior in a given year. For example, the 2018 report will highlight data from 2016.
Here are the annual reports for the following years:
Waste Diversion - Trent is required under Ontario Regulations 102/94 and 103/94 to perform an annual waste audit and use that information to develop strategies to improve waste reduction and diversion on campus. Audits estimate the campus performance of reduction and diversion systems using samples of waste and collection data. Trent's audits demonstrate a diversion rate typically between 70-80%.
Please see our most recent audit here.
LEED Buildings (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) - Trent has two LEED projects on campus - The Life and Health Sciences Building and the addition to the PSB Wilson Athletics Complex. Below are the LEED Score Cards and highlight how these buildings achieved this certification.
- Life and Health Sciences Building, LEED Gold
- Addition to the PSB Wilson Athletics Complex, LEED Silver
Trent Lands - Trent has a vast campus of more than 1400acres and boasting more than 30kms of Trails through our campus nature areas. Trent is embarking on a process to streamline the land use planning on campus and for more information you can visit the Trent Lands website. The current and original guiding documents for land use are included here:
