General Background
Kim has been a practicing social worker for over 30 years in roles including but not limited to counselling, research, program development and management, community development, leadership, and advocacy. She has worked mostly in the addictions field, as well as mental health, bereavement, trauma, and general private practice. She has co-authored a textbook using an innovative approach to teaching "re-search" methods to social work students in the context of Turtle Island/Kanata/Canada. This approach includes using worldviews (Indigenous, post-positivist, interpretive, and transformative) as the foundation for understanding a range of knowledge-creation methods and their relevance and use in social work practice. Kim is working on a second textbook about developing and using micro-skills for communicating, building relationships, influencing, facilitating, and mobilizing change across the helping professions. With lived experience, she has also engaged in bereavement and trauma-informed direct practice and research, particularly focusing on the social construction of the bereavement process and how we as a society approach bereavement. Her teaching interests are varied but focus mostly on re-search methods, linking theory to practice, leadership, and innovative anti-oppressive direct-practice interventions.
