Trent Pre-Medical Society Mentors and Supports Future Medical Leaders
Award-winning student-led group helps Trent students navigate toward success in professional schools
The Trent Pre-Medical Society is paving the way into future careers in medicine for aspiring students through key networking opportunities, vital information, and unwavering support. No aspect of the journey is left unexplored.
“I believe that students benefit a lot from our Pre-Medical Society,” said Erika Crowley, president of the society and a fourth-year Biochemistry and Molecular Biology student with a specialization in Health Science. “Our executive team of intelligent, successful and approachable upper-year students act as a mentoring system.”
Since its inception in 2010, the student-run organization appeals to students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary, pharmacy, nursing or other related areas.
The Trent Pre-Medical Society covers all practical aspects of preparation for medical professional schools, including application procedures, interview preparation, practice entrance exams such as the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and information sessions. The society’s Facebook group and website serve as central sources for information and resources, highlighting undergraduate research opportunities, local volunteer placements and upcoming events.
Guest speakers and scheduled events such as Window into Health Care and Mingle with Medical Residents provide motivational and up-close experiences for members.
Sharing comments from a previous society member, Ms. Crowley recalled: “For a long time medical school just seemed like this impossible objective. Meeting the residents and hearing their stories made my dreams feel real and possible.”
The Trent Pre-Medical Society recently received the Trent University Club Leadership Award 2016 from the Trent Central Student Association for demonstrating exceptional leadership in all activities, both within the club and in the Trent University community.
“The award recognized our hard work,” stated Ms. Crowley who plans to become a doctor herself. “We try to be leaders at Trent and hope to be leaders in medicine. Our society's core values are based on helping our peers and creating a strong supportive network. The Leadership Award really highlights that we are achieving these ideals.”
