Hugh Anson-Cartwright, B.A.Sc.

Hugh Anson-CartwrightAn honorary Doctor of Letters degree is conferred upon Hugh Anson-Cartwright for his work to support and preserve Canadian literature and heritage, and his internationally-recognized authority on rare books.

Mr. Anson-Cartwright has given generously to many Canadian universities, and has remained a steadfast friend and advisor to Trent University’s Bata Library and Archives and academic programs since their inception. Many of the University’s finest book collections materialized from his sharp eye and facilitation, including the recent donation of Robertson Davies’ collected works and ephemera.

In 2000, a festschrift titled Hugh Anson-Cartwright Bookseller: A Celebration was published to honour Mr. Anson-Cartwright on his 70th birthday. The book pays tribute to the far-ranging and lasting influence of a good bookman and his thoughtful approach to business, as well as his incredible generosity and affability to those he has encountered.

Mr. Anson-Cartwright plays an active role preserving our national literary heritage and is a stalwart supporter of contemporary Canadian literature by providing assistance and encouragement to many emerging and established writers.

Trent University is very pleased to bestow its highest honour on Hugh Anson-Cartwright for his dedication to the preservation of Canadian literature and respected authority on rare books.
