The Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre (TCSRC) has added another prestigious international honour to its growing list of design awards as it was recently awarded a 2011 Global Excellence Award Honorable Mention in the Spa/Fitness/Wellness Category by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA).
The second annual Global Excellence Awards, an international interior design competition honouring the best in interior design projects from around the world, is truly global in scope with winners chosen from 92 international design firms from 32 countries around the globe. Entries were judged on representation of outstanding originality, and excellence in the creation of international interior design and architecture projects.
“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award,” said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics at Trent University. “This honour puts our new state-of-the-art community facility on the international map. The TCSRC truly is a remarkable athletics and recreation centre and we encourage all members of our community to come out and see it for themselves.”
"We are honoured and excited to receive this international recognition for excellence in design,” added Duff Balmver, design principal for Perkins+Will in Toronto, the architects behind the project. “We thank the 2011 Global Excellence jurors and the IIDA for honouring the TCSRC with this significant award."
The new Athletics Centre at Trent opened in September 2010. As the only fitness and recreation facility in the growing north end of the City of Peterborough, the TCSRC provides vital wellness services to all residents. Unique and innovative features of the new Athletics Centre include: North America’s most advanced indoor combination rowing/paddling tank, an indoor climbing wall, 12,000 sq. ft. cardio loft and weight room, warm therapy pool, expanded therapy clinic, and a complete makeover of the pool. The new Athletics Centre is complemented by outstanding outdoor facilities, including the Justin Chiu Stadium which features an artificial grass playing field, 405-metre track and stadium seating for 1,000 people. Community memberships at the TCSRC are available. Visit www.trentu.ca/athletics for details.
Earlier this year, the TCSRC was presented with two additional design awards, a 2011 North American Copper in Architecture Award (NACIA) by the Copper Development Association (CDA) and the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association (CCBDA), and a bronze citation in the American School & University 2011 Education Interiors Showcase, the premier competition for excellence in the interior design of educational facilities.
