Trent Varsity Women’s Soccer Splits Preseason Contests
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Excalibur defeat Redeemer Royals and fall to Brock Badgers
Monday, August 29, 2011, Peterborough
The Trent Excalibur women’s soccer team opened their preseason schedule by splitting road contests over the weekend. The team knocked off the Redeemer Royals by a 2-1 score, before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Brock Badgers.
The Excalibur rode goals by Shannon O’Brien in the 22nd minute and Jesse Longchamps in the 70th minute to down Redeemer. The game was highlighted by defence, as the back four of Natalie Selkirk, Jenn Powless, Kelsey White and Emily Larkin did an exceptional job of clearing the ball while rookie keeper Sarah MacGregor played a strong game in goal.
In their second contest of the weekend, the youthful Trent team couldn’t hold off the more experienced Brock squad. The Excalibur had a tough time adjusting to the pace of play in the first half, allowing three Badger goals in the opening 45 minutes.
The squad was able to make adjustments at halftime, and played a stronger second half. It was mid-way through the final 45 minutes that rookie Rachel Pearson scored her first goal of the preseason, making the final score 3-1.
The team will continue training throughout the week and will open their regular season with another road contest at Laurentian on Saturday.
