Gina Collins Receives 2009/10 Nancy E. Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Long-time Trent Staff Member Honoured for Leadership of
2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair and Regional Fairs

Thursday, June 24, 2010, Peterborough

At the Board of Governors luncheon held earlier today at Trent University, the 2009/10 Nancy E. Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence was presented to long-time staff member Gina Collins, in recognition of her leadership of the 2010 Canada-Wide Science Fair hosted by Trent in May and for her work on the Peterborough Regional Science Fairs.

“I have known Nancy Simmons Smith for a number of years. She is a remarkable person and I am truly honoured to receive this award,” Ms. Collins said. “I love working at Trent. The people, students, staff and faculty are what make this place so wonderful. Hosting the  Canada-Wide Science Fair was something I had wanted to do for a number of years and I was very fortunate to have the support of my supervisors, co-workers and Trent administrators to help bring this national event to Trent.”

Gina Collins has been working at Trent since 1997. She currently serves as the academic secretary for the Department of Physics and Astronomy and for the Applications of Modelling in the Natural and Social Sciences M.Sc. program.

The Nancy E. Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence is named in recognition of Nancy E. Simmons Smith, Trent University’s former University Secretary and Secretary of the Board of Governors from 1987 to 2008. It recognizes non-academic staff members whose work demonstrates excellence and exceptional commitment to the University. The award comprises of a cash gift of $500 and a framed citation which was presented to Ms. Collins by Ms. Simmons Smith at today’s Board luncheon.

Ms. Collins’ nominators stressed that her contributions to Trent, “extend far beyond the departments/programs of her formal duties. She has been the driving force behind the annual Peterborough Regional Science Fair for the last 13 years and was an integral part of Trent University’s successful application to host the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) this year. Without Gina’s hard work and vision, the CWSF would not be in Peterborough and Trent University would not be host to hundreds of potential, outstanding young scientists.”

Nominators added that, “Gina is a most deserving candidate who has put her heart and her hours into making the Peterborough Regional Science Fair an annual success and the CWSF for 2010 a proud moment for Trent University and the City of Peterborough.”
