Trent and Peterborough Rowing Clubs to Christen Three New Boats

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Special Christening on April 23 to Celebrate Honourees

Thursday, April 22, 2010, Peterborough

The Trent and Peterborough Rowing Clubs will host a special celebration to christen three new boats in honour of Trent Athletics director Bill Byrick, former head rowing coach Bubba Lougheed, and the family of Trent student and varsity rower Brock O’Reilly, on Friday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at the Peterborough Rowing Club (Nassau Mills Road).

“To have a boat named in your honour is a special tribute within the rowing community,” said Carol Love, head coach for the Trent and Peterborough Rowing Clubs. “It gives the club an opportunity to honour the support of certain individuals who have made an impact on our rowing community.”

In recognition of Bill Byrick’s dedication to athletics and the rowing program, the Rowing Club is naming the new men’s heavy four in his honour. A founding member of the Georgian Bay Rowing Club, Mr. Byrick helped build a club in Midland before moving to Peterborough in 1996, to build Canadian Canoe Museum. Locally, he quickly became involved with the Peterborough Rowing Club both as a master rower and coach for the Trent Varsity Lightweight men. Mr. Byrick became the director of Athletics at Trent in 2002. In this role he has created a strong partnership between the University and the PRC to cost share a head coach to provide leadership and support to both programs. Mr. Byrick is also the Ontario University Association's Convenor for the sport of rowing.

A new boat for the lightweight women’s eight will be named after Trent alumna and former varsity head rowing coach, Bubba Lougheed. Ms. Lougheed attended Trent from 1984 to 1987 and graduated with a degree in Biology. During her time as a Trent student, she was also a varsity lightweight rower. She returned to Trent as head coach for the varsity rowing team. Currently, Ms. Lougheed teaches at PCVS, where she also coaches and oversees the high school rowing program.

The final boat, a new pair’s boat, is being christened in honour of a family of Brock O’Reilly, a current Trent student and member of the varsity men’s crew. Mr. O’Reilly’s parents, Shaun and Cheryl, were so impressed with the University’s rowing program that they donated the funds to co-purchase the new boat, to be used by both the Trent and Peterborough Rowing Clubs.
