2010 Ryle Lecture Series Begins March 15

Trent Alumnus and New York University Professor Dr. Paul Boghossian to Deliver Four Public Lectures on Rules, Relativism and Reduction

Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Peterborough

Trent University alumnus and Silver Professor of Philosophy at New York University, Dr. Paul Boghossian is the 2010 featured presenter for the annual Gilbert Ryle Lecture Series hosted by Trent University’s Department of Philosophy and running from Monday, March 15 until Thursday, March 18.

The theme of the 2010 lecture series is “Rules, Relativism and Reduction.” Dr. Boghossian will be delivering a series of presentations on this theme each evening at 8 p.m. in the Champlain College Lecture Hall (CC 307). All lectures are free and members of the community are welcome to attend. Lecture topics include:

  • Value and Blameless Disagreement - Monday, March 15
  • Varieties of Relativism - Tuesday, March 16
  • Rules and the Nature of Reasoning - Wednesday, March 17
  • Is Meaning a Naturalistic Phenomenon? - Thursday, March 18

Dr. Boghossian is the author of numerous articles and books including Fear of Knowledge: Against Relativism and Constructivism and Content and Justification: Philosophical Papers. He has held research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Magdalen College (Oxford), the School of Advanced Study (University of London), and from the Australian National University (Canberra). He has also been a visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, a Fulbright Senior Specialist and a fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities. He attended Trent from 1974-78 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.

The Gilbert Ryle Lectures were established by the Philosophy Department at Trent University in 1977 in memory of the late Professor Gilbert Ryle of Oxford University. They are made possible by a grant from the Franklin J. Matchette Foundation and by funds from an endowment established by members, alumni and friends of the department. Each year the Ryle Lecture Series brings a distinguished philosopher to the University for lectures and informal meetings. Recent lecturers include Alvin Plantinga, Iris Marion Young and Drucilla Cornell.
