President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament Raises $45,000 to Support Varsity Athletes
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Funds Raised at Fifth Annual Event Featuring Special Guest LPGA Winner Sandra Post to Establish New Athletic Financial Award in Honour of Outgoing Trent President
Friday, June 19, 2009, Peterborough
On June 18, 2009, the fifth annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament, sponsored by Bell, and held at Peterborough Golf & Country Club, raised an impressive $45,000 to support Trent University’s varsity athletes and to establish the Bonnie M. Patterson Athletic Financial Award.
Special guest, Sandra Post, provided an entertaining and informative golf clinic to participants prior to the tournament. Ms. Post, an eight-time winner on the LPGA tour, member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, and a member of the Order of Canada, toured the course throughout the day, taking shots with golfers and providing tips along the way.
This year's tournament honoured President Bonnie Patterson at the end of her distinguished terms as president of Trent University. President Patterson steps down on June 30, 2009, after 11 years in office. The Bonnie M. Patterson Athletic Financial Award will enable the University to recruit top athletes by providing financial support. Contributions to this endowed fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the government's Ontario Trust.
In total, 76 golfers participated in this year’s tournament, including President Patterson, and University chancellor Dr. Roberta Bondar. The tournament was a shotgun scramble format that included contests throughout the day, which were coordinated by some of Trent’s student varsity athletes. Following the tournament, guests enjoyed dinner in the Great Hall at Trent, donated by Aramark.
In speaking of the successful tournament, Trent’s director of Athletics, Bill Byrick, stated: “It was a great event, with community members and corporate friends helping raise more money than ever to support varsity athletes at Trent. Bonnie has always been a big supporter of our varsity program and we are honoured to have an athletic award in her name, supporting the future success of varsity athletes attending Trent.”
Congratulations and thanks go out to everyone who participated, with special appreciation to the many generous sponsors who helped make this year’s event such a success.
